We undertake most Civil Engineering groundwork jobs, working on projects throughout the entire North West and Yorkshire, including Manchester.

The type of work tends to be Car Parks, Playgrounds (with or without equipment), Roads, Footpaths and Forecourts. We lay all types of surfacing including tarmacadam, concrete, block paving, soft play surfacing, resin bond, flagging and kerbing. We have laid and renewed setts in conservation areas.

Monk of Colne carries out a range of work across a number of sectors, including the Public Sector (schools, police, fire, ambulance, health authorities, county councils and local councils), Private Sector (commercial and private landlords), as well as with Individuals (private homeowners and business owners).

We are equally willing to do either reinstatement work or full projects from start to finish, and we always aim to be co-operative and work well with other contractors. In the main our work comes from local authorities such as Lancashire County Council, Pendle and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Councils, Lancashire Area Health Authorities and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services.

Monk of Colne Ltd has been carrying out contracts for Civil Engineering and Groundwords since 1963. Over the years we have had experience of many projects from the everyday through to the highly unusual:

Flagging & Setts

In addition to general kerbing and flagging, we have carried out grant-funded projects in conservation areas requiring the lifting and relaying of large areas of stone setts, natural stone flags and kerbs. Ivy Gate, Colne and The Old Cornmill, Barnoldswick are just a couple of examples.

Drainage & Excavations

We have carried out work renewing and repairing old drainage systems, as well as installing new systems for various Borough Councils and Lancashire County Council.

Road & Footpath Construction

We have undertaken contracts involving the reconstruction of roads and footpaths, where one of our very many projects carried out for Lancashire County Council was at Bacup Fire Station: this was a full construction of a road, a number of drives and footpaths, drainage, street lighting, erection of road safety barriers, in addition to landscaping. Another very large project was on Morecambe promenade where we subcontracted to Volkerstevin Ltd: the work consisted of all aspects of Civil Engineering and took place over a period of around 2 years.

Macadam Machine or Hand-lay

A very large percentage of our work consists of constructing or relaying macadam to Playgrounds, Car Parks, Forecourts, and Public Areas. This most often involves liaison with Head Teachers and Lancashire County Council Technical Officers. We feel that we are able to work closely with representatives and generally manage to develop very good relationships: in fact, company policy is that all employees endeavour to achieve good relations with clients. There have been several instances where schools we have worked at previously have specifically asked technical officers to ensure Monk of Colne Ltd carry out their projects.

Much of this type of work actually comes via Lancashire County Council or Capita (Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council) or independent Schools that manage their own budget.

Work on these projects mainly involves excavations and levels, any necessary drainage, kerbing and flagging, base course and top course tarmacadam, machine or hand lay.

Street Calming Areas

We have done this type of work for both Lancashire County Council Preston and Pendle Borough Council.
