Multi-Use Games Areas

MUGAs provide durable, versatile spaces for schools, parks and community sites. We build MUGAs in tarmacadam or artificial grass, tailored to your sport, budget and site.

Tarmacadam offers a firm, long-lasting surface for high traffic and ball sports that need stability. Artificial grass gives a softer, more natural feel — ideal for football, tennis and hockey where comfort and playability matter. We’ll help you weigh the trade-offs against your user group.

Our teams install with precision — from base build to surfacing and line marking — selecting materials for safety, performance and appearance. A well-built MUGA is mostly about the stuff you can’t see: base construction, drainage and edge detail.

Choose Monk Of Colne for robust, low-maintenance MUGAs that perform year after year.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Our Multi-Use Games Areas

We design and build to your brief — from hardwearing tarmac to player-friendly artificial grass.

01

Full self-delivery service

We handle design, groundworks and surfacing in-house — using our own teams and equipment for competitive pricing, reliable timelines and consistent quality.

Design, groundworks and surfacing all come from a single Monk Of Colne team — removing the hand-offs that slow MUGA projects down. That gives clearer accountability, tighter programme control and a consistent standard from base through to final line markings.

02

Precision surface construction

Specialist methods ensure correct levels, drainage and line accuracy — delivering a safe, even and attractive playing surface.

A MUGA lives or dies on its base. Our crews take time over the sub-base, falls and drainage before laying the surface, then finish with carefully set-out line markings for the intended sports — so the court plays correctly on day one and stays that way.

03

Safety first

Clear site procedures, regular training and modern machinery keep projects safe, efficient and compliant.

MUGAs often go in at live schools and community sites. Documented procedures, disciplined segregation of the works, ongoing training and well-maintained machinery keep our crews and the public safe while the job progresses around them.

04

Customer satisfaction

Transparent updates, practical aftercare and proactive follow-ups help your MUGA perform at its best long term.

We stay involved after handover. Clear aftercare notes, a thorough walk-through with site staff and follow-up visits from our mobile support team help protect the investment and catch wear or drainage issues early — before they become bigger problems.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is a MUGA?

A multi-use games area (MUGA) is a single hard-surfaced court designed for multiple sports — football, basketball, netball, tennis and hockey being the most common. Line markings, fencing and goals are configured around the sports the space needs to support.

Tarmacadam or artificial grass — which is better?

Tarmacadam is firm, hardwearing and excellent for basketball, netball, tennis and general-purpose play. Artificial grass is softer underfoot and plays more naturally for football and hockey. If the MUGA needs to cover a broad mix of sports and heavy use, we’ll help you weigh the trade-offs against your priorities.

Which sports can one MUGA support?

Most MUGAs are set out to accommodate several sports — typically football and basketball or netball, with tennis and hockey added where space allows. We’ll help you prioritise the primary sport when marking out so play experience isn’t compromised.

Do you fit fencing, goals and rebound walls?

Yes — we can specify and install perimeter fencing, rebound boards, recessed goals, net posts and access gates as part of the overall MUGA package, coordinating everything from one team.

What maintenance does a MUGA need?

Tarmac MUGAs need little beyond periodic sweeping and the occasional re-line. Artificial grass MUGAs benefit from regular brushing, debris clearing and the occasional deep-clean. Written aftercare advice is provided on handover.

Can you build on a constrained or sloping site?

Often yes — levels can be managed with retaining structures, phased groundworks and tailored drainage design. At the survey stage we’ll identify constraints and propose a sensible construction strategy.
