Overview

Road & Footpath Construction

Roads and footpaths need different build methods and materials to suit their use. We source from leading suppliers — Tarmac, Cemex and Holcim — for consistent quality.

Roads are machine-laid in multiple layers of robust tarmacadam, typically using 10mm or 14mm Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) for strength and long life under heavy traffic. Aggregate size, binder course depth and compaction all have to be right for the traffic the road will carry.

Footpaths are mainly hand-laid for precision, using smaller aggregates and thinner layers for a smoother finish suited to pedestrians. Both roads and paths can be delivered in a range of colours to match the setting — useful for heritage areas, shared-use routes or branded private estates.

Monk Of Colne pairs advanced road plant with careful hand work on paths — ensuring durable, safe and neat surfaces built to high standards, whether that’s a new estate road, a carriageway resurface or a village footpath.

Why Choose Us

Why Choose Our Road & Footpath Construction

From major carriageways to walkways, we match machine and hand-laid techniques to your brief for lasting performance.

01

Full self-delivery service

We manage everything in-house — planning, traffic management and construction — using our own teams and equipment for competitive pricing, reliable timelines and consistent quality.

From initial planning to project completion, a single Monk Of Colne team takes the work through. In-house planning, traffic management and construction capability means better programme control, fewer hand-offs and more predictable delivery on both public-realm and private schemes.

02

Precision construction

Proven methods deliver correct levels, compaction and drainage — producing robust, smooth and visually tidy surfaces to your specification.

Road and footpath work rewards discipline — correct sub-base, accurate levels, consistent compaction and tidy hand-detailing at kerbs, gullies and ironwork. Our crews combine modern plant for the base and binder courses with careful hand finishing so the final surface is both durable and neat.

03

Safety first

Rigorous procedures, regular training and modern plant keep projects safe, efficient and compliant.

Working on or near live highways demands proper traffic management, well-trained crews and disciplined site control. Our documented procedures, ongoing training and investment in modern equipment mean every scheme is delivered safely and in line with current standards.

04

Customer satisfaction

Clear updates, practical aftercare and proactive follow-ups ensure your road or path performs and looks its best long term.

We stay involved after handover. Clear aftercare guidance on first-use care, defect inspection during the maintenance period and proactive follow-up visits by our mobile support team protect your investment and keep the surface performing as specified.

Our Process

How we deliver

A consistent, clearly communicated approach from first enquiry through to aftercare.

  1. 1

    Consultation

We discuss use, traffic and setting — new estate road, carriageway resurface or village footpath — and advise on the right materials and build-up.

  2. 2

    Survey & planning

We survey the site, check levels, drainage and utilities, and plan phasing and traffic management so the works sit sensibly within the surrounding operation.

  3. 3

    Construction

Base build, machine-laid binder and surface courses for roads, hand-laid finishing for footpaths, and careful compaction for a durable, even surface.

  4. 4

    Handover & aftercare

Final walk-through, aftercare notes, and a follow-up visit from our mobile support team to keep the road or path performing long term.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between roads and footpaths in construction terms?

Roads are built to carry vehicle loads — multiple compacted layers, larger aggregates (typically 10mm or 14mm SMA) and machine-laying. Footpaths are built for pedestrians — thinner layers, smaller aggregates and more hand-laying for a smoother, tidier finish.

Who supplies your materials?

We source from leading industry suppliers — Tarmac, Cemex and Holcim — for consistent quality and reliable availability. Material and mix selection is matched to the use, setting and any specification requirements on the project.

Can roads and paths be coloured?

Yes. Coloured tarmacadam is available in a range of tones and is often used on cycleways, shared-use routes, bus lanes, heritage areas and private estates. We’ll discuss options at the survey stage.

Do you handle traffic management?

Yes — traffic management planning and delivery is part of our self-delivered service on road projects. We coordinate signage, closures, diversions and pedestrian routing as part of the works.

Can you undertake resurfacing and patching as well as new build?

Yes. We deliver new construction, full resurfacing, planing and overlaying, and targeted patch repairs. At the survey we’ll advise honestly on whether a resurface is enough or whether the base needs attention too.

How do you minimise disruption?

Careful phasing, out-of-hours working where it makes sense, proper traffic management and clear communication with site users. Programme and phasing are agreed up-front so everyone knows what to expect.
