Why Choose Us

Why Choose Our Tarmacadam Installation

Fast, cost-effective and durable — built for high traffic and a quick return to service.

01

Full self-delivery service

We manage planning, traffic management and installation in-house — using our own teams and equipment for control, efficiency and consistent quality.

From initial planning to project completion, Monk Of Colne offers a fully integrated, self-delivered tarmacadam service. In-house expertise and our own specialised plant mean tighter control of programme, better value through removed sub-contractor layers, and a single accountable team from first visit to final compaction.

02

Quick installation & minimal downtime

Structured workflows and reliable plant enable swift installation so areas reopen fast with minimal disruption.

Our crews are organised around well-practised sequences — prep, paver, roller, hand-detailing — so a site keeps moving without wasted motion. For commercial clients this translates to shorter closures, earlier reopening and a smoother experience for staff, customers and neighbours during works.

03

Cost-effective solution

Competitive pricing and long service life deliver strong value and low whole-life costs.

Tarmacadam is one of the most economical surfacing systems available — and sensibly specified, it lasts. We advise honestly on mix, thickness and edge detail so the initial spec suits the site’s real-world use, reducing the need for premature repairs and keeping long-term costs sensible.

04

Safety first

Rigorous procedures, ongoing training and modern equipment keep our sites safe, efficient and compliant.

Safety is non-negotiable — for our teams, clients and the public. Documented method statements, regular refresher training, traffic-management planning and well-maintained plant ensure every tarmacadam project is completed securely and in line with current standards.

Our Process

How we deliver

A consistent, clearly communicated approach from first enquiry through to aftercare.

  2. 2

    Survey & planning

We visit the site, check levels, drainage and edging, and produce a programme with traffic-management plans where they’re needed.

  3. 3

Final walk-through, clear aftercare advice on first-use care, and a follow-up visit from our mobile team to keep the surface in top shape.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Where is tarmacadam most commonly used?

It’s the default choice for highways, estate roads, driveways, car parks, footpaths and industrial yards. It handles high volumes of traffic and harsh weather while remaining straightforward and economical to repair or resurface.

Can tarmac be coloured or patterned?

Yes. Coloured tarmacadam is available in a range of tones — red, buff and greens are common — and we can combine bands or zones for wayfinding, parking bays or conservation-sensitive settings.

How do I look after a new tarmac surface?

For the first few weeks, avoid heavy point-loads (pram wheels, trailer jockey wheels, stands) in hot weather while the surface fully cures. After that, keep it clear of debris, address oil spills promptly and have edges checked periodically. We’ll leave you written aftercare notes on handover.

Do I need planning permission or drainage upgrades?

It depends on the site — domestic driveways can sometimes need permeable solutions or drainage provision, and commercial sites may have SuDS requirements. We’ll flag any considerations during the survey so there are no surprises.

What’s the difference between tarmac and asphalt?

In modern UK usage the terms overlap — “tarmacadam” broadly describes bitumen-bound aggregate surfaces. We typically specify Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) for heavy-duty roads and standard dense bitumen macadam for driveways and lighter trafficked areas.

Can you work around a live site or limited access?

Yes. We regularly phase works, use out-of-hours windows and provide traffic management so operations can continue. Access and phasing are agreed up-front at the survey stage.
